How Minecraft stacks and storage work
Convert items into stacks
A stack is a group of identical items in one inventory slot. Most building blocks stack to 64. Ender pearls, eggs and snowballs stack to 16; tools and filled buckets take one slot each. Select an illustrated item to use its default stack limit, or enter a custom limit.
Divide the item count by the stack limit. The whole part is the number of full stacks and the remainder is the loose items. For example, 1,735 stone blocks are 27 full stacks plus 7 blocks, occupying 28 slots.
Convert stacks back into items
Switch to Stacks → items. Multiply the full stacks by their limit and add the loose items. Two stacks of ender pearls plus 3 pearls contain 35 items at 16 per stack. Loose items must be smaller than one full stack.
Count chests and shulker boxes
A single chest or shulker box has 27 slots. A double chest has 54. The player inventory preview counts 36 main and hotbar slots, excluding armor and the offhand. Storage needed rounds up to the next container, even if the last one is only partly filled.
At 64 per stack, one shulker box holds 1,728 items; a double chest holds 3,456. Thus 1,735 stone blocks need two shulker boxes, with 7 blocks in the second one. Browse the containers to see how the items are packed.
What the calculation assumes
Each calculation packs one identical item type into empty slots. Item data, damage and edition differences can affect stackability. Shulker nesting, bundles, armor and partially occupied storage are not included. Save a project in this browser, share its settings or export the result as CSV.
