Build your roof, layer by layer

3D: drag to rotate, scroll or pinch to zoom. In Explore mode, click a block to jump to its layer.

Layer plan: the exact blocks for the selected Y level. The gold band in 3D shows this layer.

Progress: mark individual blocks or a whole layer. Green means built. Undo restores the previous state.

Keyboard: focus the plan. Page Up / Down changes layers; arrows select a cell and Enter marks it. R resets the camera.

How to build a Minecraft roof

Choose the roof shape

A gable roof has two slopes that meet at a ridge along the length of the house, with a triangular wall at each end. A hip roof slopes on all four sides, so there are no gable walls; on a square house it becomes a pyramid. A lean-to roof has a single slope, high at the back and low at the front, which suits sheds, porches and extensions.

Size, overhang and pitch

Enter the outside width and length of your walls. Width runs across the ridge and length runs along it. An overhang of one or two blocks continues the slope past the walls on every side, so the eaves hang below the wall top and throw a shadow, as on real houses.

Stairs give a 45° roof that rises one block for every block across. Slabs give a gentler roof of about 27°: bottom and top slabs alternate and the roof rises half a block per block. A 9-block house with a one-block overhang needs a 6-layer stair roof or a 4-layer slab roof.

Stairs, hip corners and the ridge

The tall back of every stair faces the ridge, so the step opens down the slope towards the eaves. Where two slopes of a hip roof meet, the generator uses outer corner stairs. Place each stair while looking towards the ridge and Minecraft forms the corners on its own. The ridge cap is the top row: slabs give a low ridge, full blocks a raised one.

Build it layer by layer

Use the Walls button to jump to the layer that rests on your walls, and line up the dashed outline in the layer plan with your walls. Layers below it are the overhang. Gable walls fill each end from the wall top to the roof; on a slab roof, the roof above the gable uses full blocks so no half-block gap is left.

Take the plan into Minecraft

The Java 1.21.5 .mcfunction export keeps the facing of every stair, the corner shape at each hip and the half of every slab. Run it from the lowest north-west corner of the overhang. CSV exports list X, Y, Z and the exact block state. What to collect counts every block, and Plan the crafting opens the list in the Resource calculator.
