How to build Minecraft map art

Start with a level-zero map

Each unzoomed Java map has 128 × 128 pixels. In this tool, one pixel is one solid block at the same height. Choose one map or arrange up to four maps in a 2 × 2 mosaic. This palette targets Minecraft Java 1.21.5; Bedrock map shading can differ.

Map colours, not texture averages

A block's map colour is defined by the game. The map preview uses the normal flat-surface shade, with each base RGB channel multiplied by 220/255 and rounded down. Concrete and wool share map colours; mixed blocks use concrete and terracotta. Detailed mode uses dithering rather than extra elevations.

White margins fill the space left by a whole-image fit. Transparent pixels also become white before matching. Original images are processed locally, and saved projects keep the block plan and progress.

Align your build before placing blocks

Use an unzoomed map that covers your chosen position. Its northwest corner falls on X = −64 + 128k and Z = −64 + 128m, where k and m are whole numbers. X increases east; Z increases south. The coordinate helper finds this corner from a position inside the first map.

Build the extra reference strip one block north of the image at the same height. The strip is included in the material counts and coordinate exports. Keep the whole surface level, with open sky above it; terrain, shadows from higher blocks and a missing north strip can change the result.

Export and use your plan

Map PNG exports the selected 128 × 128 colour image. The mosaic PNG combines all maps. CSV coordinates are relative to the northwest art corner, with the reference strip at Z −1. Java .mcfunction commands place solid blocks at relative Y 0: stand at the aligned corner at the intended surface height. Test commands in a backup world before using them on a build you want to keep.

These exports are building plans, not map.dat, schematic or Litematica files. Walk across the finished surface with the matching level-zero maps to update them, then display them in item frames. Use Image to Minecraft for decorative walls and texture-based pixel art instead.
