How to build a Minecraft spiral staircase

Choose the size and the climb

The diameter is the outside width of the tower, from 3 to 41 blocks. Height is how many blocks the staircase climbs. A 3-block staircase winds around a single column; wider towers give wider steps and an optional open well in the middle.

Steps per turn sets how steep the staircase is. Players need two free blocks above every step, so a turn needs at least 3 stairs, or 5 slabs. Auto gives every block next to the centre its own step, which keeps the climb gentle. The headroom shown is the space between a step and the step directly above it.

Stairs, slabs or blocks

Stairs rise one block per step and face the way up, so you can walk without jumping. Slabs alternate between bottom and top halves and rise half a block per step. Full blocks rise one block per step and need a jump each time.

Build it layer by layer

Start with layer 1 at Y 0 and work upwards. The layer plan shows the wall, the column and the steps for that height; downloaded layer images add an arrow pointing up each stair. Mark blocks as you place them and save the project to keep your progress on this device.

Take the plan into Minecraft

The Java 1.21.5 .mcfunction export places every stair with its facing and every slab in the right half, relative to where you run it. CSV exports list X, Y, Z and the exact block. What to collect counts every block, and Plan the crafting opens the materials in the Resource calculator.
